July 6th---Cooking by ourselves

We went to the market selling Chinese food in the northeast of Ann Arbor and bought rice, potatoes, tomatoes, eggs, green peppers and so on. All of us missed Chinese food very much and we cooked by ourselves in the evening. It was very difficult because we had seldom done it before.

There was a clear division of labor among us. Not knowing that the spatula is made of plastic, Chris put it in the hot oil and it melted. Finally he used a knife as the spatula temporarily.

It took us more than 2 hours to prepare a whole meal, and we had never been so hungry that we almost ate it all!

July 5th---BBQ and watching films

We were invited to a BBQ outside Tracy's House. The food was fantastic. There were all kinds of burgers, hot dogs, chips, bunches of grapes, strawberries, watermelon and a few kinds of beverages.

Although it was smoky, I had a wonderful time to communicate with other students who are also participants of REU.

The girl from Thailand really scared me in that not only could she speak a few Chinese words but she had also seen the famous TV series 'Chuckle Of Huan Zhu' which was released around 1998 in China! It was very funny when we decided to teach her the first Chinese character '囧' which means embarrassed. The word '囧' is not a real Chinese character (you will never find it in a Chinese dictionary) but a picture made by ourselves and it has spread through the internet all over China. It really looks like an embarrassed face.

Late in the afternoon, Tracy and us exchanged our well-orchestrated and selected pop music. We talked a lot about education in China and America and we showed where we live in China on the google map and the websites of our high schools.

At last, we watched the movie 'Shrek' which was both interesting and exciting. But we felt really sorry that we had stayed in Tracy's House for such a long time! It was after midnight when we finished the movie and started to come back to our dormitory. We were so frightened that we almost ran to Oxford Rd., for nobody wanted to be robbed or even hurt!

July 2nd---Arrival at Ann Arbor

It was really tired and cold during the flight. What's more, it was hard to tell what time it was on the aircraft because of the jet lag...and the evening was very short for we were flying east!

The most interesting thing must also be the jet lag. We transferred our flight in Japan at about 4 in the afternoon and after a long trip in the air we got to Detroit at about 3 the same afternoon!

Mr.Ming & Tracy & the driver (I don't even know his name) were so nice to help guide us to Ann Arbor where we would live for a couple of weeks. We were even invited to have dinner with them at Buffalo Wild Wings :) The food was really delicious and we tried different kinds of wings.

Unfortunately, it started to rain when we were going back and all of us forgot to bring umbrellas...It was very kind of Tracy and two of her friends to send us back to our dormitory by car:o)

I really appreciated what all of them did for us. Thank you all for helping us.

July 3rd---Being guided around

We just did some paper work, card things and got around under the guidance of Tracy. I finished my mobile phone things there and the price was ok.

Late in the afternoon, we went to Meijer by bus to get some food and commodities. I was astonished to find that the cars and buses have to stop at each crossing. It will never happen in China for it is so crowded there.

I think Tracy is a very energetic girl, for I couldn't tell if she was tired just from her face, and she told me that they usually slept for only 6 hours during the school days! But she must also be tired, as both Yiyang and me had no mood for anything else but taking a shower and going to bed early after all the day's walking around.

July 4th---The Independence Day

We did nothing special as it is the American Independence Day.

I just hung around with Zhu Rong and took lots of pictures. The environment is fantastic here compared to China. Everything here is like a picture and we are moving creatures in it. There are less people and cars and we find it is very easy to cross the road compared to Beijing.

Other people told me there was a parade in the morning but we missed it. It was a pity that I failed to take a photo of the American parade.

Most of the stores and restaurants do not work today. We went to 4 or 5 restaurants and finally found one sandwich restaurant on the corner of the E.Liberty St.(actually I forgot its name, just remembered that it sold sandwiches). Although we had a little trouble to set our orders at first because of the condiments we had never heard of before, the food was very tasty and it was not expensive at all.

Late in the afternoon, we 6 people went past a Hall(maybe North Hall) and were excited to see lots of people there on the lawn. There was a festival for the band NOMO and some singers sang on the stage with some people dancing in the front. That's really cool!

Today I discovered a very amusing thing that it usually gets dark at 7:30 in summer in Beijing and the sun comes up at 5 to 6, but it gets dark here after 9:00! I don't know when the sun comes up here in the morning but it must be before 6! Zhu Rong and me got lost at first because we tried to tell the direction only by the sun and we soon found out the sun was still in the southeast at noon while it is usually right in the south at noon in Beijing!

Isn't it the truth that Ann Arbor and Beijing are almost at the same latitude? They should have almost the same length of the day. I'm confused why they are so different in this time issue except for the jet lag?
